When It Rains…

…and you have a 2 1/2 year old going nuts in the house, It’s not smart to wait until the moment to come up with a project.  In the true spirit of my Virgo-ness. I’ve planned ahead.

In-Door Hopscotch Mat.  The pattern and instructions are here.   There are a few versions  this one is on page 4.   Thanks again Pinterest.

This project was so much fun.  And took about 2 hours.

The most time-consuming part was tracing and cutting all the numbers after that it was easy.  The felt is attached with a hot glue gun…be careful.  I forgot how hot those little things can get.   Actually this is a no-sew project but I had to add a little something to it.

The red border binding.  It’s 2 packs of Wrights Bias Tape Wide Single Fold.  I folded it in the middle on either side of the edge and sewed away.  No pins, just held it in place and it worked great.

Rounded the top edges as per the instructions…

After sewing the two pieces of canvas together I sewed down each side of the seam just to make it look neat.

And then!!!!! Let the fun begin…….I kept trying to tell her I put this outside to get better pictures because the light is better.  Like she cares.  “My hopscotch mummy…wanna play with me?”

As this age it’s not so much about the actual game but jumping around and having fun.  It’s also a great way to teach her numbers and colors.  Kira, can you jump on the number 7 or the red square?…  “Dis One Mummy?”

Don’t forget the non-skid runner underneath if you’re not on carpeting…

Perfect timing…guess what the weather is like here today….

Serafina

So here it is my latest quilt, Serafina….

There are so many firsts  for me and this quilt, in a way I’m sad to part with it.

My first Disappearing 9 Patch pattern for the piecing.

The first time I put green and pink together…ever….

I love the backing fabric…

First free motion quilting and first machine stitch binding (which I don’t think I”ll do again for a while.  It’s super fast but not “clean” looking to me).

This was also the first time I used the walking foot on this machine and I’m so happy to say, no pucking.  That has been an issue for me.  The binding always pucked at the end but not this time.  It came out perfectly…

I hope you like it Serafina…I can’t wait to meet you and see you all snuggled up in it.

…getting to know all about you.  Who, you ask?  Big B…

Sorry for not getting the BLT up this past Friday but I was getting ready for a guide/”getting to know your sewing machine” class at Hartsdale Fabrics that was yesterday, Saturday.

It was a thin slice of heaven for me.  From 10 to 2 I was guided through the wonderful world of Bernina.  My jaw was on the ground for 4 hours as I discovered all the things I now had at my finger tips.  I was dizzy  from all the possibilities.   I also got over, completely over my fear of this machine.  You know the feeling, you don’t want to touch to much, unscrew anything, change settings then can’t get it to do what you want again and have no idea what you did or changed.

I’m free now and this machine will bend to my will.  This was just a bit of the fun we had.

The best part was using the BSR for the first time….OMG!!! This is worth the price of this machine all by itself.  For those not familiar but still interested check out this link with a full explanation.   To put it simply, the BSR, Bernina Stitch Regulator, regulates the length of your stitches when you do free motion quilting on your machine.  In other words you look like a total pro without having to even work up a sweat.  I swear if it was the beginning of the year instead of  weeks before Christmas everyone would be getting a quilt…

This is after about 2 mins using it.   Seriously.  I was shown what to do then it was handed over.  That simple!! That easy!!! And it looks that good!!!

That’s the wrong side….AMAZING!  I couldn’t wait to get home and play some more.   Now that I know so much more there are so many things I want to try.

This was just for fun.  I made it this morning as a practice piece to figure out how to find different measurements on the machine.  1/4″, 3/8″, 1/2″, seam allowances…This little block called for 3/8″…

I promise to try to keep blogging but with 34 days until Christmas yall, that line of smoke you’ll be seeing  in the sky will be rising off my Bernina!!!

Wordless Wednesday

Zaftig Hat

Since I’m feeling rather zaftig myself today.  I thought I have my best girl do some modeling for me.

Here’s my very simple, very warm and cozy rolled rim hat.  I finished it on the train coming home from Virginia the day that rogue storm hit the east coast…and just in time.

It fits her so well…Is my head small or is her head big?

Ok…it’s a bit long but that the point of a rolled hat…a little extra if you need it…

And on the days when I don’t need the extra it’s creates a stylish “pouchy” effect in the back.

I love this colorway!!!!

I also LOVE that face!!!!!!!

Pattern: Simple Rolled Rim Hat (cast on 98 stitches, knit until your sick of stockinette then start decreasing, K6, K2tog across the rnd, next rnd knit even, next rnd, K5, k2tog…etc…until you’re done)

Source: My head…

Yarn: Zaftig Bugga by Sanguine Gyrphon, 1 skein, colorway Killer Tree

Needles: #7 (2 circs)

If you can get some of this yarn, get it.  It truly is delicious!!!  I would love a sweater in this yarn.  Christmas gift maybe?

Like A Sweater Set…

…but so much cooler and I think a bit more fashionable.

Since Kira has sort of taken over my Ipod Touch, I use my iPhone instead.   And since I’m  always listening to an audiobook or enjoying my new “glee-nee” playlist (I love that list…and promise to post the songs) I always have my earbuds with me.  Now in the grand scheme of things a tangled set of earbuds is not a huge but it’s annoying.  Like a mosquito bite…

Solution…Ta Da!!

Circle Zip Earbud Pouch!! Another awesome Pinterest find.

Is that the cutest thing or what?  But wait it gets cuter…wait for it…

My little “sweater set”…Really,  can you have one without the other?  I couldn’t.  And I’ve already cut all the fabric to make another one.

Now if you look closely you can see that the circle is a bit off.  I didn’t go back and rip it out but I know exactly what to do differently for the next one.  It’s off because I had a hard time keep the main fabric, batting and lining fabric all straight against the nylon zipper…slippage….

This was also the first time I’d ever set a zipper…ever…not to bad.  Can you tell I love to sew? I really love to sew…

Modifications:

1.  Use fusible fleece or fusible medium weight so the fabric and batting stick together and are still reinforced.

2.  Use basting glue to keep everything from sliding against the zipper.

I think those simple mods will make all the difference.   But all that aside I would say another success.

Thank you Erin for another great project and tutorial.  Can’t wait to see what else you come up with.

So who wants a set for Christmas?

Ok, let’s get to it…

BLOG:

Is it second or third times a charm?  Doesn’t really matter.  I was charmed after the first time….Go check it out.

Pumpkin Spiced Cream Cheese Breakfast Rolls

Breakfast this sunday….oh yeah!!!  Recipe is here….

TUTORIAL:

See my next post!!! It deserved one of  it’s own….

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

And to all the Veterans…THANK YOU.  I may not have been able to write this post, have this blog, have my life if not for your service and sacrifices.

Learning…

A few months back I posted a Process Pledge button on  this blog but haven’t shown much process in a while…

Ready for some?  Here’s my first real attempt at stippling a quilt.  While it ain’t bad it aint’ great either.  Curves are not that smooth, looks a bit jerky, this stitch length is irregular and I even crossed over my stitches once or twice.  All that I can live with.  What was getting to me the most was the color of the thread.  This is what happens when you trust the judgement of others instead of listening to yourself.  More important, doing what feels right to you.

That green thread looks hideous!!!

Just look at that?…YUCK!!! It totally “uglies” the entire quilt.  Not to mention hiding the prettiness of the prints.

I was almost half way through when I just had to stop and RIP!!!  For the record that is not as bad as it sounds…it’s a small quilt, 36×36.

Take 2…Much better!!

Still a bit pokey but then I think I found my rhythm…

It’s so “soft” looking.  I love it!!!! I’m sure I will look back on this years from now and think, how elementary but for now…I’m very proud of it and can’t wait to give it away.  It’s for a new arrival, Serafina…hope she likes it?

Now I feel ready to tackle the 2 other quilts that have been sitting in the basket since June.  It’s not just being excited that it looks good but that I’m teaching myself.  I did the same thing with my knitting 12 years ago and now with quilting.  You can take all the classes you want, read books, watch Youtube or DVDs but in the moment it’s just you and your needles or your sewing machine…The sense of accomplishment is so motivating.  Should also note that I did all this without using the BSR on my Bernina…can’t wait to see what I can do with that baby…

I just saw this on Pinterest and HAD TO POST IT!!!

PUMPKIN PIE SMOOTHIE!!!!!

Get your blenders going people!!!!!  Recipe and picture came from here!!!!! Enjoy!!!!!

This one is for my sister…She’s going to trip over her own feet getting to the supermarket to buy the ingredients.

Talk about dropping the ball…I didn’t do a BLT last Friday.  I was headed down to VA to see my best friend May and god-daughter in a play and was so focused on making sure things were ready for Daddy to take the reins.  Anyway…I’m back.  Having arrived just in time for the record snow and full of ideas for this week’s post.

So let’s make this week’s installment extra special.  As we all know the holiday season is fast approaching.  Some would say it is already upon us.  That in mind…I don’t know about you but my To-Do list for this year is already out of control.  But I’m trying to take it easy and realize, as I said in a post a while back…realistic goals Den, realistic goals.   Only so many hours….

BLOG:

This week’s blogger dances to her own drum and has a great time doing it.  Not only am I inspired but also learning alot.    Go check out the Happy Zombie.  Ya gotta love the name!!!

LOVE IT:

One thing my best friend and I love to do is eat.  I can’t tell you how many times a week we lament not living near each other (She’s in VA, I’m in NY) but if we did we’d probably weigh about 300 lbs. each.  This is what she had waiting for me when I got off the train.  Butterscotch Bread Pudding…She found it on Pinterest.  I’m very happy to say she now a fellow Pinner and addict.

In case you can’t see them in this picture…

Yes those are butterscotch chips…with caramel.  “Please sir, may I have some more…”

May, kept pushing the whip cream.  Finally I gave in but this is why distance is a good thing.  The only thing growing will be my heart with longing for my friend.   My butt with gratefully stay the same size.  (I hope)

No, it doesn’t have to be perfect

Yes, you can “fake it”…a bit

and have fun!!!

Go check out, A Few Scraps: Free Motion Quilting.   It’s now my go to place.  Let’s see what I can get done this weekend with a little bit of “scrappy” inspiration.

Hope you all gleen some holiday ideas from this post but remember don’t go nuts…
